Acupuncture and Fertility for Men

A third of couples trying to conceive find that their challenge lies with the man’s fertility.  The health of a man’s sperm not only impacts upon the chances of conception but also the health of the potential child.

Problems may be due to or exacerbated by hereditary factors, genito-urinary illness and injury or lifestyle choices. Any man with concerns about his fertility should have sperm analysis tests with possible hormone assessment and chromosome tests to follow.  Poor sperm test results may show problems in the number of sperm produced, their form, their motility or semen abnormalities.

New sperm are constantly being produced over a 72 day cycle therefore considerable changes can occur in sperm test results. Supportive care may include a course of acupuncture and addressing such areas as poor nutrition, obesity, exercise, stress and exposure to environmental toxins.

Problems that may arise with male fertility include:

  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Chromosome defects
  • Ejaculation difficulties
  • Environmental & nutritional factors
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Impotence
  • Low sex drive
  • Low sperm count
  • Poor sperm morphology
  • Poor sperm motility
  • Stress & lifestyle issues
  • Testicular damage
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Varicocele

Often both male and female partners will have acupuncture.  Couples may prefer to see the same acupuncturist or one partner can be referred to a practitioner colleague.  All sessions are strictly confidential.
